About Operation Chastise

Things you may like to know.

Operation Chastise  was a historical attack on German dams carried out on 16-17th May 1943 by RAF 617 Squadron later know as the Dam Busters. The “bouncing bomb” developed by Barnes Wallis was fitted to the Lancaster MKIII (special).

Mick Martin was Guy Gibson’s deputy leader on Operation Chastise, Martin’s aircraft being the third to run in on the Mohne Dam. David Shannon’s run was called off as the dam was breached but carried on to be the first aircraft to strike the Eder Dam. Both Lancaster pilots were awarded the DSO for their part in the raid.
