About Don Kingaby

Things you may like to know.

Don Kingaby joined 92 Sqn in 1940 after flight training and was immediately thrown into the thick of the Battle of Britain. Somehow surviving his first combat missions – many didn’t – on 12th October he shot down his first Messerschmitt in a dogfight over Kent. He quickly got the hang of air combat and on 15th November 1940 destroyed four Me109 fighters in a single day. In just two months he was awarded the first of his DFM’s. With 92 Sqn going on the offensive in 1941 he added to his score during fighter sweeps over Northern France, and became recognised as a potential fighter leader. Now commissioned, in 1943 Kingaby was given the Hornchurch Wing flying daylight bomber escort missions, later providing low-level cover during the D-Day landings. This highly decorated ace flew Spitfires throughout the war, downed 23 enemy aircraft, and was the first and only RAF ace to receive three DFM’s.
